“Meet Clara!” Chloe Elaine Moulton

For a young ballet dancer, it doesn’t get much better than opening your Nutcracker casting letter to find out that you’ve received the role of Clara. This year, San José Dance Theatre presented this news to three dancers, Amanda Baumann, Mia Watson Fong and Chloe Moulton. After a collective 30 years of study between the three dancers, and having performed in countless Nutcrackers, receiving the coveted role of “Clara” is their first opportunity as dancers to carry the narrative of a ballet. Yet all three dancers have their own unique style and path that has led them to this role. All three dancers share their story of dedication and success in their spotlight profiles.

Introducing Chloe Elaine Moulton, a homeschooled eighth grader.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS DREAMED OF BEING CLARA, AND WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO HAVE THIS ESTEEMED ROLE? WHAT ASPECTS OF THE ROLE ARE DEMANDING ON YOU?

Ever since I was a angel in The Nutcracker, I’ve wanted to be Clara. When I lived in Huntington Beach I was a party girl and our Clara, Tyler Donatelli, was my biggest inspiration. She’s in the Houston Ballet now and watching her made me want to do the role even more! Now that I am Clara it feels great to perform, but it is a very big responsibility. The part of the role that is most demanding is really getting into the character.

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU TOOK YOUR FIRST BALLET CLASS? DID YOU IMMEDIATELY FEEL PASSIONATE ABOUT IT?

I was 2 years old when I took my first ballet class. I always loved going to ballet when I was younger, and as I got older I enjoyed it more and more!

AT WHAT AGE DID YOU REALIZE BALLET WAS WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE? WAS IT A SLOW PROGRESSION OR CAN YOU RECALL A PARTICULAR MOMENT?

For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to dance in a ballet company, but over summer the opportunity to join a full day ballet program with Brooke Nicholson came along and joining this program made me realize how bad I really want this!

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT BALLERINAS?

The biggest misconception about ballerinas is that ballet is easy. I think that people believe this because a ballerina’s job is to make it looks effortless.

IN WHAT WAYS IS YOUR CHILDHOOD DIFFERENT FROM YOUR NON-BALLET FRIENDS?

My childhood is different from my non-ballet friends because I am homeschooled and go to a full-time ballet program.

My favorite book is The Fault in Our Stars.

YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE?
